Thoroughly Confusing Last.FM

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Since I seem to be hung up on Last.FM lately..

Last just can’t seem to keep up with my musical preference. If you’ll look over to the right, most of the entries are grayed out. It can’t figure out what I’m listening to.

Is it really that hard to see “6Zeromancer_-_Stop_The_Noise” and parse that down to Zeromancer or 6Zeromancer (we’ll assume the former, if you did a cross reference for validity) track called “Stop the Noise”.

C’mon. Cut us a bit of programming here.

Last.FM Wins Again

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

So I was thinking of how to post some updates of what I’m listening to. Then I considered the fact that last.FM catalogs everything from Amarok.

Which turns out to be a win all around, for now.. now you can check what I’ve listened to recently journalized to your right.

I know. You’re all very excited.

Acer ASPIRE 4520 Review Forthcoming

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

I’ve actually had the gumption to write up the first review of the new season. All it needs are some pretty graphs and analysis of the same and it’s good to go.

Graphics-wise there is one oddity that’s throwing up a bit of a sticking point. Running the OpenGL test “glxgears” in a dedicated Xorg sessions prior to starting up an initial X session kicks in at 1500 fps … while starting the same session up after an KDE desktop is running (or after it’s been closed) results in a frame rate of 900 fps.

A roughly 30% drop.

Needless to say this will require a bit more investigation before I go to press with the review.

Foamy Tech Support part IV

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Ill Will Press has another of the foamy tech support flash shorts up. Part IV. Hilarious, if a bit offensive.

Not satanic.org offensive. But still.

(eep. Satanic.org has disappeared through the wash of time. Looks like it’ll join The Corporation and Winnie the Pooh goes Apeshit)

Funny web comic I stumbled across over at XKCD. It’s all about bringing the internet to life… your cat’s life, at least.

Online Picture Gallery in Ruby on Rails

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

So I’ve decided I need an online picture gallery that looks acceptably good and is fairly easy to edit/maintain.

And the obvious programming language to slot these categories is Ruby on Rails.

What I’m arriving at here is the need for a RoR based gallery for photos that does watermarking, allows for at least a few nifty in-line effects, and is easy to upload to.

Really, the uploading part can be server side. SFTP is both simple and secure, so why invent teh wheel.

But the rest of it just isn’t currently available in any form I’d call “simple” or “well designed”. There are a few cookie cutter Ruby image galleries out there… but they all appear to involve way more code than I think a display app requires.

Going on the KiSS principle the UI isn’t an important feature. It’s the only feature. Everything else can be handled on the OS end (upload, edit, removal) and if those are desirable in-site, they can be added in later. If the user experience isn’t polished that’s all a waste anyway.

So! From scratch (well.. as “from scratch” as it gets with GEMS anyway) it is!

New Data Recovery Resource

Friday, July 13th, 2007

So Dan and I teamed up to put together a site on data recovery for and using Linux. I’ve been looking for a steady writing project to go along with PCBurn only with a more commercial bent. PCBurn isn’t currently geared toward heavy moneymaking, it’s geared toward giving me and others a platform on which to write and showing users interesting products.

This’ll be largely the same content-wise, but with zan_d’s marketing skills attached. And a targeted URL toward the subject matter. All in all, it should be self sufficient with a wealth of data recovery/Linux information. Check it out at LinuxRecovery.org.

Tuning in to Other People’s Music

Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

Last.fm looks like a fairly interesting service. Check out what other people are listening to. If it’s in the catalog, listen to it too!

Plus it looks like there’s integration in Amarok. That’s what I use to listen to audio these days, what with it’s exhaustive feature set, so that’s pretty important.

In addition to checking out last I’m also getting pulseaudio going. It looks like yet another audio daemon so I’m curious if it’s better than the rest of the (somewhat dissapointing) pack.

NAS (Network Audio System) always looked good and may yet be the audio layer of choice, but it’s a bit under the radar at the moment. Methodical is how I’d describe those Xorg folks.

And hey, whatdya know. It’s installed. Time to go play with last.fm :) .

New Foamy over at Ill Will Press

Friday, May 18th, 2007

Ill Will Press has a new Neurotically Yours flash animation of everyone’s favorite pissed off squirrel, Foamy, online. It’s another of the rants as opposed to the quick storyline animations.

Warning: generally not safe for work. Unless you work where I do. In that case, watch away.
